6 shows where the hero is also the creator

16/03/2021

They say that if you want something done right, better do it yourself. This is also true in the world of TV series. Some actors/creators/directors have given themselves the show of their dreams. Let's take a look on 6 series of which the central figure is also the creator.

Fleabag

It's impossible not to include Fleabag among these happy few. And for good reason, the series worn by Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a gem in its luxury case. Creator and lead actress, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is the cornerstone of this show, which portrays a single thirtysomething Londoner facing the challenges of life. Notably, her best friend, with whom she had run a small guinea pig-themed café, has recently passed away. Acid, funny and raw, the series has the peculiarity of having a protagonist who constantly breaks the fourth wall, very frequently taking directly to the viewer, for absolutely anything. An exquisite and clever TV series that gets devoured in no time!

Atlanta

Donald Glover has several hats. Singer, under the stage name Childish Gambino, but also actor, creator and showrunner under his real name. While he is well known for making hit after hit and for the hilarious show Community, it is with this more alternative auteur series that we chose to bring him to light here. Atlanta is the story of Earn, a thirtysomething on the sidelines who decides to become the manager of his rapper cousin, Paper Boi, to support his wife and daughter. Together, they live a whole bunch of unexpected adventures to lead Paper Boi on the path to glory. A hybrid fresco with a strong sense of humor, Atlanta has been renewed for seasons 3 and 4!

The Mindy Project

The Mindy Project is the experimentation ground of actress Mindy Kaling. Through the character of Mindy Lahiri, the actress explores comedy through the prism of a gynecologist who juggles her professional life in the hospital and her personal life. A hilarious show, The Mindy Project displays a well-balanced clever humor that turns squeaky from time to time. In total, The Mindy Project has no less than 6 seasons led by Mindy Kaling.

I May Destroy You

Before the important I May Destroy You, there was Chewing Gum. For her new series, Michaela Coel completely switches register. Exit the British comedy as dark as cringe and sassy. In this new series, the actress/creator delves into a traumatic event in her life: rape. Important and primordial in this post-#MeToo era, I May Destroy You tells the journey of Arabella as she tries to trace back to an evening a little too drunk where violent images come back to her suggesting that she was the victim of a rape. Powerful, the series is also cathartic for the actress who took time to write down and put into pictures this traumatic episode of her life.

Duchess

Comedian, writer but also actress, Katherine Ryan has custom-tailored herself a bespoke series: Duchess. In this Netflix comedy, Katherine Ryan plays a single mother who thinks her daughter is so great that she dreams of giving her a little brother or sister. There's just a thing, Katherine (strange as it may seem, the main character has the same first name) is, as we mentioned, single and is clearly not surrounded by stable men in her life. Her only options are her ex and a new date, a dentist, whom she doesn't see on a regular basis. Under the guise of humor and eccentricity, Duchess actually portrays of a woman far more feminist than she seems, always with stylistic extravagance and seeing only one use in men: reproduction.

Insecure

Let's complete this overview with Insecure, the show created by and for Issa Rae. In this HBO series, Issa Rae brings to life the character of Issa (you don't say?), a thirtysomething who juggles a profession that she's passionate about but doesn't pay off, and a romantic relationship that is running out of steam. In this fresco, Issa questions her life and shares many adventures alongside Molly, her BFF, a lawyer who has trouble settling down, romantically speaking. They are two contrasting women whose lives are the reflections of our contemporary era. Insecure shakes up all the questions of our time in a smart fashion, under the warmth and comforting sun of Los Angeles. Be careful though, if the passion of Insecure were to find a place in your heart of TV show fan, season 5 currently in production will also be the last...
