Just like his character Nathan Scott in One Tree Hill, James Lafferty was part of his high school's basketball team. As such, he was already a standout player when he was chosen to be one of the heroes of the teen drama. This wasn't the case for his co-star Chad Michael Murray, who needed a coach to help him improve his performance on the court and truly embody the talented basketball player Lucas Scott.

In addition to being one of the two lead actors in Everyone Is Doing Great, James Lafferty also works as director, executive producer, and co-writer on the series. This is not his first attempt at filming, as he started his directing career in 2009. While One Tree Hill was in full swing at that time, James Lafferty stepped behind the camera. In total, he directed four episodes of the show between 2009 and 2012.

In Everyone Is Doing Great, James Lafferty portrays Jeremy Davis, an actor struggling to find success after starring in a big TV show. This role somewhat resonates with his own experience, as he revealed to Us Weekly in 2021: “I can relate to where Jeremy is in our show from my own experience, just coming off of One Tree Hill and just being so young on that show, and I guess, naive. I thought that when that show ended, things would be pretty easy for me, that it would be easy to work again in television. Coming out of One Tree Hill, I think it was a real reality check. It was a real wake-up call as to how incredibly competitive it is out there.”

When asked about his favorite films in an interview with Glamour magazine in 2012, the actor proudly expressed his love for the saga created by J.K. Rowling. While he cited Wayne's World as his "all time favorite comedy", he continued, "I also love the Harry Potter films - they're genius! I watched all of them last Thanksgiving break– I couldn't believe what I was missing."
