6 plot holes you didn't notice in YOU

16/02/2023

On the occasion of the release of Netflix's YOU season 4, we propose you to look back at the plot holes and inconsistencies that we can observe in the episodes of the first three seasons. And some of them are really blatant!

The numerous fingerprints and DNA traces in season 1

YOU viewers know that Penn Badgley's character Joe is no stranger to murder. Except that our dear sociopath is far from being particularly careful when stalking someone or committing a crime. Joe's DNA is never found, even though he touches a lot of evidence. We all remember episode 6 of season 1 specifically when Joe infiltrates the Salinger's property to spy on Peach and especially Beck. In addition to the surprising lack of cameras, the New York bookseller disseminated many clues which could have incriminated him. Between his fingerprints, his hair and the glass filled with his urine, the viewers may wonder how Joe was never arrested.

In episode 5 of the first season, Joe tries to get rid of Peach while she is jogging in Central Park. He hits her in the middle of the New York park without wearing gloves. Worse, he throws the stone, stained with Peach's blood, only a few meters away from her. But that's not the only problem. We then find out that not only did Shay Mitchell's character survive, but she has no major injuries, no bandages or anything. In only two days, Peach was healed as if nothing had happened. We now understand why Joe was in shock...

Where did Candace’s corpse go in season 2?

At the end of the first season, Candace’s return shocked everyone, including Joe. The protagonist’s former girlfriend, who he thought was dead, makes her comeback in season 2, where she tries to get back at him for his attempted murder. In the final episode, before the viewers discover Love’s true nature, there is a plot twist when she slits Candace’s throat outside the storage facility. The character played by Victoria Pedretti then returns to Joe in order to explain herself. But what did she do with Candace’s dead body? Was her corpse left bleeding out during all this time?

Is that really Penn Badgley in the photo?

In the last episode of season 3, Love uses Joe’s phone to send a message to Marienne (Tatie Gabrielle), the sociopath’s new obsession. But web users quickly noticed that there was a problem with Joe’s contact photo…since it’s not the face of the actor Penn Badgley. Indeed, if we look closer, we can see that it’s another person who could pass himself as the star, but only from a distance! The question is why the show’s production had chosen to put the photo of another comedian.

How did Joe know the right day to take adrenaline?
How did Joe know the right day to take adrenaline?

During the same episode, Love tries to get revenge on her unfaithful husband by preparing a farewell dinner for him. However, Joe, suspicious, took advantage of her short absence to grab the kitchen knife as a weapon. Except that Love had planned it: she had covered Joe's knife with aconite, a highly toxic plant, which paralyzed him. But the latter knew that Love was planting this plant in the garden and had been doing research to find out about it beforehand. Earlier in the day, he had taken pills of adrenaline just before the meal to dissipate the effects of the poison. A reflex that allowed him to be paralyzed for only 45 minutes, giving him the opportunity to counterattack Love's fatal blow. But then, how was Joe able to pinpoint the exact day to take adrenaline?

Besides, how could Joe have escaped to Paris?
Besides, how could Joe have escaped to Paris?

After Joe faking his own death, the final moments of YOU season 3 show us several things that don't really hold up. First, Joe Goldberg looks like he's walking well with both feet when he had cut both of his toes and had to heal himself. Then, with all the victims in Madre Linda and the fire at Joe and Love's house, it seems completely illogical that he could fly across the Atlantic without worry. The police would have to investigate and it wouldn’t be possible for Joe to go to Paris so easily while pretending to be dead.
