These French TV series that are a total game-changer

13/07/2021

If the TV series world is quite dominated by the US, France is not outdone thanks to some productions. Either original ones or adaptations, focus on these French shows that are a total game-changer.

Call My Agent!
Call My Agent!

We can say it, Fanny Herrero's show is a success! During four seasons, those fiercely ambitious ASK agents were ready for anything to seduce their clients who are nothing but big French or international cinema stars, present in the show to play an exaggerated version of themselves. Led by Camille Cottin, Grégory Montel and Thibault Montalembert, the show was highly praised by the international press and exported in several countries such as Canada, United Kingdom or even Turkey.

SKAM France
SKAM France

French adaptation of a norwegian show, SKAM France is a small revolution in terms of teen series. Each season is centered around a specific character and each episode is cut into little sequences that are broadcasted in real time on the internet. Plus, each season explores a specific theme directly linked to the character: religion, handicap, denial of pregnancy... SKAM France dissects everything without any tabou and offers a teen show that probably should figure on a curriculum.

Lupin
Lupin

With Lupin, Netflix hit (really) hard. Led by Omar Sy playing the gentleman burglar, Lupin is one the platform biggest successes; and yet, it's a French show... It even made its way on the most-watched programs of the platform with 76 millions views around the world. France now has a pretty nice representative abroad and it's Assane Diop!

Validé
Validé

A show about French rap, before 2020, didn't exist. Yet, CANAL+ gave Franck Gastambide the green light to put together this series about the musical genre most listened to in France. If the show does revolutionize the TV series landscape, we can admire the risk to explore such a theme and also praise it for its innovative casting with people we've never seen on screen before. A second season is in production and should come out shortly.

Plus Belle la Vie
Plus Belle la Vie

You can say whatever you want about Plus Belle La Vie but it's a fact that it made its mark on the French TV series landscape. Daily soap opera which depicts the lives of ordinary people living in Marseille, Plus Belle La Vie inserted itself into the lives of French people pretty quickly. Since 2004, the show has been on the television - and the heart - of almost every French person. Plus Belle La Vie paved the way for other daily soap operas like Tomorrow Is Ours or Ici tout commence.
