5 good reasons to watch Lions Bones & Bullets

05/06/2021

On June 21st, the Festival will host the world premiere of the documentary Lions, Bones & Bullets, a poignant and necessary movie highlighting a dangerous yet thriving industry. Here are 5 good reasons why it's a must-see documentary.

A documentary anchored in our generation

With the world slowing down because of the global pandemic of COVID-19, we have to keep an eye out for environmental issues. The beginnings of the epidemic surrounding the pangolins and wildlife animal trades belong to the same movement. Lions, Bones & Bullets highlights the business surrounding lions. Trophies that are still very coveted today for their bones which are used for chinese medical purposes for instance.

Lions, Bones & Bullets puts a finger on unsettling truth

The truth is that today South Africa is still able to export legally (to Asia especially), bones and other lions' body parts, according to given quota, whereas international business law forbids it. Therefore, some lions are bred for the only purpose of being killed and sold. Some hunters can even choose one from a distance and then come and kill it themselves. A sordid but flourishing custom that makes thousands of dollars.

A thorough investigation

Lions, Bones & Bullets is the product of a very thorough investigation done by Richard Peirce, an author passionate about wildlife breeding farms from South Africa to South-East Asia, where you can find most of these traffickers. The movie isn't only based on this unknown practice, but also offers conceivable and realistic alternatives to this atrocious trade.

For it's famous voiceover

If you are the kind of person to notice every detail, you will probably recognize the voice behind Lions, Bones & Bullets. It is in fact the British actor Peter Egan, well known for his role in Downton Abbey, that does the voiceover. Huge advocate for wildlife preservation, the British comedian leads this distressing documentary with a powerful voice.

To take our blinders off

Time has come to take our blinders off regarding this current practice. If you need a reminder about what is going on on the other side of the planet, Lions, Bullets & Bones will be your ideal ally. Richard Peirce doesn't only highlights the dangers of this trading business on a small scale, he also shows the international repercussions lions' hunts can have. Large-scale traffic, sanitary risks… Everything is explored during the 73 minutes of the documentary.
