6 offbeat humor shows to discover

25/03/2021

Comedy lovers are always looking for a little gem to enjoy. Alongside the greatest classics like, say, Friends, there are also several less-known shows with scathing humor. An overview.

Chewing Gum

If you come across an episode of Chewing Gum for the first time, chances are you're wondering: “… What the hell?" Needless to say, the show created by and starring Michaela Coel looks like an unidentified televised object. Available on Netflix, Chewing Gum tells the story of Tracey, a 24-year-old London grocer whose undisputed idol is Beyoncé. Born into a religious family, Tracey is still a virgin, yet she has only one thing in mind: to have sex. From then on, the protagonist gets bogged down in a whole bunch of crazy and hilarious situations. Chewing Gum is a fine nugget of British comedy, spiced just right!

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Kimmy Schmidt is a 29-year-old woman who finds herself propelled into the New York jungle after spending 15 years locked in a bunker under the yoke of a cult. While the matter is serious and may be dealt with in a somber way, in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, it is quite the opposite. The viewer discovers a whole new world before the naïve eyes of Kimmy Schmidt (played by Ellie Kemper). Surrounded by hilarious and crazy neighbors, Kimmy gets to learn how to be a real city girl.

The InBetweeners

No matter what anybody says, in terms of dark comedy, the British rule! If the teen series The InBetweeners isn't evidence for this fact, nothing is. We follow the high school life of four students considered big losers. Simon, Will, Jay and Neil are obviously far from being the most popular boys in high school, yet they try everything to get rid of that "loser" label that sticks to them.

The Office

When it comes to absurdist humor, The Office is one of the masters of the genre. It is impossible to do this bit without a mention to this iconic TV series. The Office plays on a very particular humor that requires several episodes to get used to. That makes the show headlined by Steve Carell all the more fun. We follow the daily lives of employees of Dunder Mifflin, a company that sells paper in Pennsylvania. Through the lens of work, the viewer follows the adventures of employees in their everyday lives: love, friendship... it's all there.

The Eric Andre Show

Beware, the viewing of this program is not without consequences… Welcome to the surreal and crazy world of Eric Andre. Tailored like an American style talk show, the comedian has carved out a bespoke show with literally no holds barred. No. Holds. Barred. No, really, none of them. The Eric Andre Show is a clever cocktail of situations, each more embarrassing than the next, where you don't really know if you should laugh or feel uncomfortable. It is on this fine line between the absurd and the cringe that lies the genius of the man we could find in the sitcom Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23.

The End of the F***king World

The End of the F***king World is probably not the first show we think of when it comes to comedy, yet this British TV program sure is filled with it. A gem of dark humor, the Netflix comedy-drama series introduces us to an explosive duo formed by James (Alex Lawther) and Alyssa (Jessica Barden), two teenagers on equal terms in derangement. While James has psychopathic inclinations, Alyssa is an impulsive teenager who is not one to bite her tongue or hold back. The two form a Bonnie and Clyde-style teenage duo. A delight!
