TV shows to watch if you really love music

11/03/2021

In the sweet world of TV shows, it's possible to combine several passions. And if you are a real fan of music, there are several TV series that give this art a place of choice. Focus on these shows to watch if you really love music.

The Eddy

When Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) goes behind the camera to make a TV series, you have The Eddy. An true ode to Jazz, this popular music genre cherished by the director. The story takes place in Paris, in a Jazz club owned by Elliot Udo (Andre Holland), a former pianist and jazzman from New York. But after opening his own Jazz club in the French capital, Elliot's world crumbles when he realizes that his associate, Farid (Tahar Rahim), is probably involved in some shady things. You can find The Eddy on Netflix.

The Get Down

Hip-hop fans, The Get Down is definitely made for you! It's hard to miss this cult TV series that takes place during the 70s during the birth of hip-hop. While the transition between disco music and more underground stuff is happening, The Get Down follows 5 young boys through the streets of The Bronx, looking for musicality. This Baz Lurhrmann (The Great Gatsby) show is a bountiful saga which tells the story of hip-hop in all its forms: music, rap, street art and breakdance. Therefore, it's not surprising that we can find big names like Grandmaster Flash or Nas attached to the project.

Euphoria

Euphora is clearly not a show about music. This chilling story about american teenagers living in the 21st century, is first and foremost this deeply moving painting of several strong characters working through some difficult things. If the teens from Euphoria don't have the same issues, they are all confronted with difficulties facing life. Zendaya leads this raw and touching story that shows teenage angst without tabou. But why has Sam Levinson's show everything to appeal to music fans? For its soundtrack, obviously. Labrinth composed a trippy, gut-wrenching soundtrack that sublimates every scene of the show. Pssst: Drake is also one of the show's producers, that's saying a lot...

Validé

It's hard to pass on Validé while making this non-exhaustive selection. And for good reason, rap music is an integral part of the French musical scene and it cannot be dismissed. Therefore, Franck Gastambide decided to put together Validé, the very first French TV show about rap. The story follows Apash (Hatik), a young prodigy, on his way to success. His journey is obviously full of obstacles and the young rapper is going to meet some people who will do anything to see him fail. Between low blows, freestyles and musical performances, Validé really appealed to rap fans and helped promote - for real this time - Hatik on the French rap scene.

Empire

Let's stick to hip-hop with the Lyon family. When Lucious Lyon, big hip-hop producer, is diagnosed with an incurable disease, he starts to look for someone to take the reins of his business. Amongst his sons, there're Jamal and Hakeem, two very talented artists, and Andre who has a real sense for business. But let's not forget about Cookie, their mother who just came out of prison after 17 years behind bars and who's ready to take her part in what she reckons is her Empire. You guessed it, in Empire, hip-hop is king. The soundtrack is amazing and there're a lot of really good musical moments. A must-see for every hip-hop fan out there!

Glee

We close this selection with an impossible to miss hit show for people who really love music. Ryan Murphy's show tells the story of not so popular highschoolers who decide to unite around their passion : singing. In Glee, you can hear all the pop music classics, from Britney Spears to Rihanna and Katy Perry. Watch out, the Glee Club soundtrack is very catchy and you will probably find yourself whistling every tune remade without even realizing it.
